El Paso is forecast to see colder temperature Monday night, with a small possibility of snow in the forecast, National Weather Service officials said.

Mostly rain and a “dusting of snow” was expected Monday night and early Tuesday morning in the El Paso area, National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Rogash said.

“For the El Paso area, we’re going to see later tonight into tomorrow the chance of rain or a rain-snow mix,” Rogash said Monday. “It will depend where you are in the area. It looks like it could be rain changing into snow and vice versa, with some ice pellets thrown in as well. “

Rogash said El Paso will see less than an inch of snow. The mountain areas will see the most snowfall.

“We are looking at snow amounts of generally less than inch,” Rogash said. “Maybe a dusting of snow at best. The exception will be high mountain passes like Trans Mountain Road, but at this time we are looking at rain and snow amounts being mostly light. “

Wind gusts could reach about 35 mph, he said.

“It will be gusty, so it is going to be cold,” Rogash said.

The colder temperatures will remain until Thursday or Friday, Rogash said.

Monday night was expected to reach a low of 37 degrees, with Tuesday seeing a high of about 43 degrees.

El Paso Office of Emergency Management officials urged residents to drive carefully as the conditions are expected to create slippery road conditions. They also urged El Pasoans to take precautions as the wind will cause the area to see even colder temperatures.

“If you have to drive, be extremely careful and slow down,” Office of Emergency Management officials said in a tweet. “Gusty wind conditions will produce wind chill. Layer up, bring your pets inside, protect your plants and secure any loose objects. “

El Paso Fire Department officials urged drivers to slow down and stay alert as the weather could cause traffic issues on Interstate 10 and other roadways.

The Texas Department of Transportation’s tips for driving in snowy, rainy or icy conditions include:

  • Slow down. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions.
  • Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice.
  • Watch carefully for snow removal equipment and stay at least 200 feet behind snowplows.
  • Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first.
  • If your vehicle starts to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes. Steer into the direction of the skid until you have regained traction, then straighten your vehicle.
