Xylem and Esri Partner to Analyze Risk Across 88,000 Pipe Segments, Reduce Planning Time by 75%
RYE BROOK, NY – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Global water technology company Xylem (NYSE: XYL) has helped the City of Raleigh (Raleigh Water) Utilities Department achieve a more clear of its 2,340 miles of pipelines, some of which are over 100 years old. Accurately predicting which parts of the pipe system could fail helps Raleigh Water locate maintenance, avoid unnecessary digs, and reduce water pipe breaks.
By combining Xylem sensors and advanced risk analysis with Esri location intelligence software, Raleigh Water has achieved a much more accurate, predictive, and focused view of its potential hotspots. Deciding which water pipes to replace took 75% less time than in the past, while reducing unnecessary capital costs and water loss due to pipe failures.
“Based on what we have seen with Xylem’s predictive modeling services, we are convinced that replacing these pipes is the best value for money,” said Adam Haggerty, asset manager for Raleigh Water. “It’s a game-changer for us, and it’s something we can use for a wide variety of applications. ”
“It’s a huge challenge to manage risk in a large pipeline network,” said Rocio Echeverria, vice president and general manager of Xylem. “You have to predict the failure of an asset that you can’t see, knowing that the parts were built at different times in different ways. If you get it wrong, you prematurely replace some pipes, leaving the higher-risk parts of the network in place. So, getting it right with advanced risk analysis gives the utility more confidence, saves the community money, and lets you dig only when you need to.
“This is a great result for Raleigh Water, which demonstrates the power of combining GIS data with insight into the water system,” said Christa Campbell, director of industrial solutions: water, Esri. “We’re excited that together, Esri and Xylem are bringing new actionable business intelligence that delivers real savings by targeting work in the city where the need is greatest. ”
Xylem Asset Performance Optimization analyzed the entire utility network, combining historical pipeline failure data with information from Raleigh Water using Esri ArcGIS Enterprise. The resulting assessment identified the 1% of pipeline segments at risk, scattered throughout the city, based on their probability of failure. The team then grouped together groups of at-risk pipes to prioritize for more targeted preventive maintenance.
The data-driven risk model also supports a city-wide initiative to increase racial equity by removing bias from the selection of infrastructure projects. To date, Raleigh Water has planned six projects using the results of Xylem’s analyzes. He estimates that working with Xylem has already saved the utility 75% of planning time while reducing risks to the network, decreasing response times and decreasing the impact on the community of outages that could occur.
